Details: Help the locals of Aizu-Wakamatsu carry a large mikoshi (portable shrine) while getting splashed with water from the local hot springs. If you don’t want to help carry the shrine, you can follow the shrine and help throw water on the people carrying it!

Fukushima Waraji FestivalName: Fukushima Waraji Festival

Date: August 5th (Friday) – August 6th (Saturday)

Address: 国道13号信夫通り National Highway 13, Shinobu Street

Details: The people of Fukushima City will carry giant waraji (straw sandals), weighing two tons and measuring 12 feet in length, down Shinobu street. There will also be dancing, a straw sandal competition, and many other events during this two-day festival.

Details: What better way to cool off during the hot summer than by playing in the snow? Hinoemata gets the most snow out of any area in Fukushima prefecture, so they save some snow every year to have a snow festival during the summer. This festival will feature a beer garden, sledding course, dogs, and a fireworks show on the first night.

Sukagawa Fireworks FestivalName: Sukagawa Fireworks Festival

Date: August 20th (Saturday)

Details: Sukagawa boasts the largest fireworks festival in the prefecture. The fireworks show lasts for an hour and a half and can be seen from anywhere between the event area and the station. If you only go to one fireworks show during the summer, this is definitely the one to pick!
